“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

Second Timothy 1:7 reflects the significant role the Holy Spirit plays in our daily lives. The Holy Spirit makes up one of the three-person Trinity and is given to Christians as a guarantee of the fulness of salvation to be experienced after physical death—which should elicit victorious joy! The Spirit supplies strength and courage in times of suffering and produces fruit to be observed in our lives.

In this portion of scripture, Paul reminds us that the Spirit will not cause us to fear, but instead move us to exercise power, love, and self-discipline. When we fail or struggle to practice these attributes, we should conclude that we are not following the command of God to walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). In response, we must submit our minds and our will to God’s purposes so that we may walk confidently and courageously down the path the Lord is leading.
