In the age of social media, “friends” come and go at the click of a button. Surely, this is not the idea of “friends” that Jesus had in mind when he told his disciples “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command... I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:13-15)
Of course, the kind of friend that Jesus describes is much rarer than our social media friends, but each of us knows at least a few people like this. People that will always be there to help, at any time, for any reason, and in every way because that’s what friends do. Let’s take a moment to thank God for each of these friends by name, as we also commit to being a loyal friend in return.
