And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
God is love. This is John’s thesis statement in chapter 4. But to understand the impact of John’s words, we must look beyond our sentimental concepts of love, and consider the depth and breadth of Godly love.
God’s love manifests, as John tells us in earlier verses, in Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross. There is no fuller, more complete description of love than the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It is through Jesus that we know God, experience His character and live in relationship with Him. And we rely on Jesus’ greatest act of love for our salvation, not just believing, but trusting and living according to what he has done.
And so our relationship with God and our trust in Him is evidenced by His love at work in us. To live in love is to abide in God’s holiness while we serve others with hearts of humility, compassion, and grace.
