But you, Lord, are a shield around me,

my glory, the One who lifts my head high.

David was overwhelmed by an army that had risen up against him. And on top of this, his own men were predicting his downfall, believing that even God would not rescue David. Yet David did not waver in his hope, trusting in the Lord to be his shield around him. He trusted that God would protect him on all sides from attacks seen and unseen.

A warrior’s shield protects him from the strikes of the enemy right before him, and from the darts and arrows launched from afar. As David’s shield, God protected him not only from the onslaught of an opposing army, but from the darts of doubt cast by his own men.

God is our shield no matter what attacks we face. Whether we face opposition from those who would harm us or arrows of fear and doubt from our own minds, God surrounds us with His glory and hold our heads high.
