"The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And let the one who hears say, 'Come!' Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life."
We’re just a few verses from the end of the Bible. John has shown us the final triumph over sin and death, and Jesus has spoken final words of encouragement. Now, the Holy Spirit, the one through whom the Father draws us to the Son (John 6:44), speaking through Christ’s bride, the church, offers a final invitation to all who are thirsty to come and receive the free water of life.
At Jacob’s well, Jesus encountered a woman who had come to quench the physical thirst of the day. Speaking with her, Jesus also revealed her spiritual thirst, which could not be quenched by ordinary water. Jesus promised that whoever drinks the living water, which only He can give, will never thirst again (John 4:14). The one that comes to Jesus thirsty will be freely given, not by his own merits but by God’s mercy, a wellspring of eternal life.
