My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
As Christians, we tend to rely on ourselves to complete day-to-day tasks, including keeping God’s precepts. Here, Asaph reminds us that it is not a matter of IF we will fail, but WHEN. God alone is infallible which is why we see Asaph worshipping the Lord amid suffering and confusion. Only God can be trusted to be our strength without wavering and to satisfy our deepest needs without fail.
Asaph provides just one example from scripture of an individual realizing their dependency on God for contentment and endurance. Some other familiar names include Job and Abraham. Job was stripped of everything and still proclaimed he had all he needed in the Lord. Abraham refused a hefty reward because he was aware of his complete dependence upon God.
We too should seek to rely solely on the Lord for our strength, comfort, and contentment. For He alone can meet those needs.
